Individual networks transcend organizations

A webinar on online training methodology which I organized met with an overwhelming interest unexpectedly.

It started telling the event information by word of mouth internally, then, quickly spread out not only in my company, but also other suppliers, fellow organizations, clients in other countries…. As a result, 110 participants from 13 countries, some are at midnight or early morning, joined the webinar.

I witnessed a linkage of individuals transcending organizations, departments, and nationalities.

This is in fact P2P (Peer-To-Peer) that I learned last month. P2P was originally a network theory to represent individual connection, which was said to be applied the theory in community development. Networks of individuals which are not derived from organizational chain of command will change society. Such individual linkages are P2P. I could feel a part of the power of P2P unexpectedly.

The webinar was under the umbrella of my company. Nevertheless, I could feel the potential: connecting individuals to the other side of earth, regardless of organizations. At the same time, that uncontrollable spread of information gave me a mixed sense of fear and amusement.

In-person seminars would not allow this wide range of participants in short time. Furthermore, without the story of developing P2P, I would not have been so open to accept the various participants.

And yet, I was surprised to find out that people are getting generous, including myself, my colleagues, and my organization. Although the world is in a difficult time due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there seems to be something nice. I wish this kind of generosity may continue even post-Covid-19 era. ■
